bso music director

Up until 1994, in my conducting career, I has enjoyed the position of Music Director with the London Virtuosi since 1972 and the Bristol Sinfonia, 1982 to 1984.

Then came the BSO........?

No, not Berlin Symphony, not Boston Symphony, not even Bournemouth Symphony, but the Bangkok Symphony, Thailand's leading orchestra! At first, when approached, in 1992, to consider this position, I didn't really think it was serious, but after a short stay in Bangkok to check out the possibilities, I was delighted to find a competent and truly enthusiastic group of musicians, so I didn't hesitate to accept the position.

Imagine the opportunity to take a talented set of players and work through the major works of the orchestral repertoire, "for the first time". To be able to bring the delights of playing Beethoven's fifth to keen musicians "for their first go at it"! What a gift! What a luxury! Extraordinary first performances by the BSO of symphonies by Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky Korsakov's Scheherazade, Elgar's Enigma Variations, and many others.
